The recent Georgian-Russian developments were discussed by the Russian and Armenian Presidents, Dmitry Medvedev and Serzh Sarkisyan, in Sochi on September 2 as they met to talk about the details of bilateral energy cooperation. Medvedev explained the Russian decision to recognise the breakaway regions and outlined its measures to stabilize the situation in the region.
A representative of the Kremlin declared that the priority of future economic co-operation between Russia and Armenia is the energy sphere. An agreement on gas provision for 2009-2011 is being prepared, and discussions on nuclear energy use have moved to a different stage. Russia is the main investor in Armenia and is the primary destination of Armenian exports.
